Flexi-Boron has a very high boron concentration (2.32 x 10²² boron atoms/cc) 14.5x15 with 25 weight-percent boron uniformly distributed through each silicone elastomer sheet. The high boron content provides a thermal neutron attenuation factor of 259 for the standard 1/8" (3.2mm) thickness. It will withstand temperatures up to 400°F (205°C) without loss of physical or nuclear properties, and is self-extinguishing when exposed to flame.

Flexi-Boron's flexible sheet material is useful for shielding irregular shapes such as cylinders. It can also be bent in a radius as small as 1/4" (6.4mm). Shieldwerx stocks several standard sheet sizes including: 1/8" x 12" x 24" (3.2 x 305 x 610mm) and 1/8" x 24" x 36" (3.2 x 610 x 914mm). Other rectangular sizes and thicknesses are available. SWX-238 is also available in cylinders of custom diameters and wall thicknesses. Though typically pre-cast, type 238 can be shipped as a field castable Mix Kit, as pictured with the Castable Shielding products.

SWX-227ATH

SWX-227ATH Borated Flexi-Panel is typically used for shielding neutrons such as those produced by high-energy accelerators used in physics research and fusion test facilities. Neutrons not shielded can produce high energy capture gammas by activating components of the concrete and other structural elements.

SWX-227ATH is a flexible light-weight sheet material with relatively high boron content of 9% (natural isotopic distribution). SWX-227ATH also includes a hydrogenous additive that helps slow the fast neutrons and can reduce the overall radiation field.

It is a relatively inexpensive neutron shielding material and is available in standard flexible sheets 5/16" thick x 48" x 48" (8 x 1219 x 1219 mm) or in custom sizes. The strong, rubber-like material is self-extinguishing when exposed to flame. Each sheet weighs approximately 32-lbs (14.4 kg) and is easily handled and installed by non-specialized personnel. This material can be cut to size using a razor knife and can be bent in a radius as small as 1", depending on the thickness. SWX-227ATH is easily attached to concrete or other wall materials using standard mounting techniques.
